Lighted rag garland

imageLast weekend was ideal for patio enjoying: hot and sunny with an extra day off! I plan to spend a lot of quality time on my little strip of a patio this summer so I set to cleaning and prettying it up. Washed it and its furniture, planted some hanging baskets and tidied in general. Rather spontaneously I decided it needed lights hanging along the arbor….like right now, this minute! In the spirit of using what’s on hand, I made do with a string of tiny led Christmas lights and summered them up with fabric scraps. Um, it turned out really cute. Even festive. I’m loving it!
imageI used 5 different patterns of fabric and tore 3 strips of each. Mine are about 12″ long and 1 1/2″ wide, slip knotted around the light cord after every two bulbs (because even with whimsical projects like this, my OCD self needs some order)! Ribbon would work just as well.
image imageI was like a small child on Christmas eve waiting for it to get dark enough to turn the lights on! How’s that for frugal summer fun!?

Strawberry-infused vodka lemonade

Happy Canada day friends! It’s an absolutely beautiful long weekend here with lots of sunshine and summer heat! I can’t think of a better time to share a refreshing cocktail recipe. I made this one up while experimenting with strawberries. Just for fun (what can I say, I like to take wild chances), I tossed a handful of sliced strawberries into a cup of vodka and left them to infuse in the fridge for a week.
imageThe infused vodka became the basis of this grown-up lemonade. Start with an empty glass and add:

  • 2-3 of the vodka soaked strawberry slices
  • a couple of ice cubes
  • 2 oz strawberry vodka (or to your taste, no judgement)
  • 1/2 cup lemonade (made from frozen concentrate)
  • 1/2 cup Sprite

Give it all a little stir and you’re set. I recommend enjoying this one on a patio. Cheers!
