This little project is totally for my niece! She has gorgeous, thick dark hair but isn’t always into washing and drying it. Maybe dry shampoo’s the way to go and I’m just the one to make it for her. Turns out it’s super simple and you probably have everything you need in your kitchen cupboards. Gather these supplies if you want to make a batch too:
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 2 tbsp baking soda
These two simple ingredients make the basic recipe which is suitable for blonde or light hair.
For mid-brown or red hair add: 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa
For darker hair add an additional: 1 tbsp cocoa (for a total of 2 tbsp)
Mix the cornstarch, baking soda and cocoa (if you’re using it) until it’s well combined and free of lumps. I found a small whisk great for this. Spoon into a small jar or spice shaker. To use, sprinkle into hair at the roots along the scalp line, or dust it on with an old makeup brush. Leave it for a few minutes then brush through hair and style as usual. The cornstarch absorbs oils while the baking soda freshens. The cocoa is really just for color as the plain mixture can leave darker hair looking a bit dull and dusty. It smells good too!
This is definitely new to me and kinda cool! Can’t say I’ll use it often but I do think it would be great for camping, travelling, post working-out or as a little gift for new moms. You sure can’t beat the price…I made all 3 colors for less than $5, including the jars. Now that’s beauty on a budget!
